Summary

A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love, in this heartwarming and enchanting fantasy。

Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries。 She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore。 But Emily Wilde is not good at people。 She could never make small talk at a party--or even get invited to one。 And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people。

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk。 Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her。

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart。

the writing is not terribly even but i was in the mood to enjoy some low stakes fantasy - “light academia” is a fitting description, i suppose

Amazing! I think this is the first book I have ever read that mixes fae and mystery in a 1900 setting。 So very different from other YA fantasy books。 I loved it。

4。5 really enjoyed this and Wendell definitely reminded me of Howl! Perfect read on a cold winters night。

Truth be told, this was difficult to get into in the beginning and I'm glad that I listened to the audio to start and then started with the physical copy because I don't know that I would've been able to get through/past some of the more difficult names/terms。 I think part of the charm of the book is the way that it truly presents as a scholarly work for the most part - it is a detail the reader is more fully able to appreciate as they get to know Emily。 This can also serve as a deterrent though Truth be told, this was difficult to get into in the beginning and I'm glad that I listened to the audio to start and then started with the physical copy because I don't know that I would've been able to get through/past some of the more difficult names/terms。 I think part of the charm of the book is the way that it truly presents as a scholarly work for the most part - it is a detail the reader is more fully able to appreciate as they get to know Emily。 This can also serve as a deterrent though because it also makes it difficult to make a connection with the main character unless you carry on。 I am very interested in reading the next installment; I think that now that I'm adjusted to Emily's unique voice and personality I will enjoy it even more than this first offering。 。。。more

4。5 I wish the book had pictures! Missed chances, cause you would think an encyclopaedia would have reference pics lol

I loved this book, the prose, the footnotes to literature about the fae and the character a driven scientist who finds herself caring for the people whose stories she came to study + some adventure along the way。 As a scientist myself, I loved the idea of seeing what a science based around fae (who people could regularly interact with) would look like I also enjoyed the style of the book as a field journal。 Cannot wait for the second one!

i finished this a few days ago and even as i sit down to write this review, i find myself giddy and kicking my feet, that's how much i LOVED this book and the dynamic between its two main characters。 this had the kind of slow burn romance that would be fitting of an Austen novel — the smallest of touches and the banter had my heart SOARING。 more than that, i just loved the mousy, antisocial emily, and the way we see her interact with the rest of the townsfolk。 i loved her loyal companion shadow i finished this a few days ago and even as i sit down to write this review, i find myself giddy and kicking my feet, that's how much i LOVED this book and the dynamic between its two main characters。 this had the kind of slow burn romance that would be fitting of an Austen novel — the smallest of touches and the banter had my heart SOARING。 more than that, i just loved the mousy, antisocial emily, and the way we see her interact with the rest of the townsfolk。 i loved her loyal companion shadow and the way we got to meet all these interesting fae — and not the sarah j maas kind — and that Fawcett actually takes the time to explain the different kinds of fae, unlike some faerie books i've read (looking at you, cruel prince)。 and the vibes were just perfection!!! gorgeously atmospheric, even with the story being told through journal entries。 i don't think this book will be for everyone, and the goodreads reviews seem to show that, but it was absolutely PERFECTION for me。 i've struggled to pick up a new book since because i just want to go back to this one, and i'm so so happy that there will be another book in emily and wendell's story。 i love them together so much and i can't wait to see what adventures these two bickering scholars will get up to next!!! absolutely a new all time favorite! i'm already looking forward to rereading。 。。。more

This I think is the most different yet nostalgic fae story I've read。 The atmosphere is calm。 I can't believe I've read a fae story not making me for once agitated and at the edge。 If you're looking for a fae story that is cozy and warm, then I would like you to try this。 However, I would like to warn you。 This is not a fast paced book。 In fact, I almost gave up reading it。 The first 30% of this book will either make you want to flip the pages or put the book down。 I had a hard time understandin This I think is the most different yet nostalgic fae story I've read。 The atmosphere is calm。 I can't believe I've read a fae story not making me for once agitated and at the edge。 If you're looking for a fae story that is cozy and warm, then I would like you to try this。 However, I would like to warn you。 This is not a fast paced book。 In fact, I almost gave up reading it。 The first 30% of this book will either make you want to flip the pages or put the book down。 I had a hard time understanding the names and places mentioned in this book。 I'm just glad Wendell and Emily are not hard to remember。 Since this book is based on Icelandic folklore, you better prepare yourself by putting in mind the names and places。 Pass 20% I just gave up remembering their names and the correct pronunciation for that matter。 That is not to say I don't love the characters。 They're not so hard to like if you ask me。And oh, since I'm not used to reading a book written in an epistolary fashion, I admit I did not pay attention to the footnotes。 Hahaha I'm sorry but it was a little bit confusing for me knowing that it's actually my first time reading this kind of book full of scholarly terms, sources and knowledge about folks。 That was the hardest part of the book I dare say。 And so, I declare that this is the most unique fae story I've ever encountered。 I suppose I'm not highly intellectual so I'm just here for the faes。 That includes Wendell by the way, and the other lovely characters of course。Emily's character for a start is unlikeable。 But when you give her a chance, you will understand why。 That is why I adore Wendell for eyeing her since。 He is the only man( fae) who ever understands where she is coming from。 Perhaps, he doesn't care because he is one of the folks。 I don't know。 One thing I know, I love their chemistry。 They're like oil and water but when it's settled they stay together。 You know what I mean? Oh nevermind。 Just read the book。🤭😂 Can you believe I did not realize this is a series? At almost the end of the final chapter, I can't help but feel sad。 I want more of Wendell and Emily。 Thank you, Goodreads you made my day after knowing that it's actually a series! Oh man *sigh 💃🕺I'm here for it。 I'm not ready to embark yet another scholarly discussion because it made my head hurts 🤭 but, I'm ready to know more about the world building。 。。。more

A cozy academic fairytale。 Literally perfection。

I went in with low expectations (mostly because I thought the name Wendell Bambleby was ridiculous)。 Alas, I was completely enchanted to be immersed in a world where fae not only existed but also a whole academic field dedicated to it。 The story was slow paced, but I found that it didn't bother me。 This definitely deserves to be categorized as a "cozy fantasy", nothing was too high stakes, and you were always secure with the fact that your character would make it out alive。 I just adored Wendell I went in with low expectations (mostly because I thought the name Wendell Bambleby was ridiculous)。 Alas, I was completely enchanted to be immersed in a world where fae not only existed but also a whole academic field dedicated to it。 The story was slow paced, but I found that it didn't bother me。 This definitely deserves to be categorized as a "cozy fantasy", nothing was too high stakes, and you were always secure with the fact that your character would make it out alive。 I just adored Wendell and Emily and found them to be quite the pair solving this mystery。 They bounced off each other and balanced out perfectly。 The mythos and storytelling were completely enthralling。 I honestly can't wait to read the next instalment of their endeavours。 。。。more

If I didn’t read this for my Book Club I probably wouldve DNF’d it。 The characters had a great personality and near the end it the plot picked up and I began to enjoy it。 But it was so hard at the beginning to really have my interested in the characters or the plot。 I would suggest this to a very specific type of group of readers but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend this to the average reader nor would I pick this up again。

This book is probably best described as a cosy fantasy with a winter backdrop。It is written in diary entry format by a professor as she documents her continued studies into the lives and customs of faeries, combining folk tales with her academic findings。I found her escapades funny and thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters, Emily and Wendell。I found Wendell highly amusing and I especially enjoyed his journal entries and how his mind worked and processed situations。I woul This book is probably best described as a cosy fantasy with a winter backdrop。It is written in diary entry format by a professor as she documents her continued studies into the lives and customs of faeries, combining folk tales with her academic findings。I found her escapades funny and thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters, Emily and Wendell。I found Wendell highly amusing and I especially enjoyed his journal entries and how his mind worked and processed situations。I would recommend this book anyone looking for a lighthearted and witty read and I will be looking forward to continuing their adventure in book 2。 。。。more

This is the kind of fantasy I need more of! Immersive, magical, creative world with exciting creatures, stories and characters。 Not too dark or heavy, action-packed yet with plenty of lore and world building。Brilliant scholar of all things Folk (and suspected* autistic) , Emily Wilde, is on a research trip on the remote island of Ljosland (which seems a fictionalised version of Iceland)。 Here she hopes to discover the secrets of the Hidden Ones, in order to complete her faerie encyclopedia。 Her This is the kind of fantasy I need more of! I'm really glad that I can start seeing a trend in fantasy to actually have enough care and respect to start writing fae correctly。 I'm honestly getting really tired of half assed misinformation a la sjm。 I hope that we can start moving away from that low effort tripe。 Anyways that somewhat angry rant out of the way this is a perfect and cozy read。 Though the romance or more or less the start of it is incredibly sudden it didn't end up being incredibly forced。 I'll be excited to see how it devel I'm really glad that I can start seeing a trend in fantasy to actually have enough care and respect to start writing fae correctly。 I'm honestly getting really tired of half assed misinformation a la sjm。 I hope that we can start moving away from that low effort tripe。 Anyways that somewhat angry rant out of the way this is a perfect and cozy read。 Though the romance or more or less the start of it is incredibly sudden it didn't end up being incredibly forced。 I'll be excited to see how it develops as these books continue。 I definitely would recommend this esspecially if you have a love of fae related folklore。 。。。more

4 STARSCW: mention of suicide, death (including of animals), blood, kidnappingI simply found this delightful。 It was easy to read and follow the story and I really liked how this story was framed by telling it through journal entries。Additionally, the mix of academia and fairytale was great in my opinion and really contributed to my enjoyment of this tale。 Admittedly, it was slightly predictable and Emily was a little annoying from time to time but, generally, I found it really easy to identify 4 STARSCW: mention of suicide, death (including of animals), blood, kidnappingI simply found this delightful。 It was easy to read and follow the story and I really liked how this story was framed by telling it through journal entries。Additionally, the mix of academia and fairytale was great in my opinion and really contributed to my enjoyment of this tale。 Admittedly, it was slightly predictable and Emily was a little annoying from time to time but, generally, I found it really easy to identify with her as I, too, often prefer to spend time alone, surrounded by all my books。 。。。more

I devoured this book last night and I have absolutely no regrets。 I honestly can’t wait for the next one。 As a former academic, I felt a bit of nostalgia and the dread of not knowing if people considered you friends or mere competition。 I love the way this was written out though I was not sure at first if I would。 It’s a field journal so it could have been incredibly dry, but it was not at all。 The people involved in the story were so rich and vibrant in their characterizations that it was easy I devoured this book last night and I have absolutely no regrets。 I honestly can’t wait for the next one。 As a former academic, I felt a bit of nostalgia and the dread of not knowing if people considered you friends or mere competition。 I love the way this was written out though I was not sure at first if I would。 It’s a field journal so it could have been incredibly dry, but it was not at all。 The people involved in the story were so rich and vibrant in their characterizations that it was easy to imagine them, and imagine Emily encountering them! The best thing about this book imho was how it seemed to touch that feeling (that is very human) of not being sure whether anyone could possibly love you exactly as you are。 And the romance of the story is that there exists this person for Emily—who rather appreciates her clinical detachment from society and her scientific mind。 There was also a great deal of adventure and exploration with such interesting faeries! I love the brownie Emily befriends, who is very endearing and a bit childlike。 I love how we get to see certain traits in a certain someone—who must have things clean and cozy! It was fun and cute and very sweet。 The personality of the writer, Emily, does make the big romance reveal scene to be a bit unexpected—her own detachment from her emotional state plays a part。 But it was fairly well foreshadowed。 As this was written in the early 1900s there is also that historical sense of propriety playing a role on this too。 Still it was delightful! I will also add that I would like a pronunciation guide to be included in the actual book。 It should just be standard for fantasy books in English that use non-English words—but especially one that’s is about studying a different culture! I could not tell you any of the place names out loud—in my head they are a vaguely Scandinavian collection of consonants that I mentally skip over。 A bit like every item name from IKEA。 I also do not think it would stand out in a book like this because it would be notes on the local language。 Sorry I don’t know Old Norse or whatever it is but if I wanted to ACTUALLY be academic right now I wouldn’t have picked up a fantasy novel。 Don’t make me work for my entertainment :P 。。。more

I'm really intrigued about the concept of faeries but Emily is so stupid at times。 Also, I don't like the other MC Bambleby and i agree with Emily that he is arrogant and uses his students to do all the work for him。 So, I'm not interested in any potential love relationship they might get into。 I'm really sad about DNFing this book。 I'm really intrigued about the concept of faeries but Emily is so stupid at times。 Also, I don't like the other MC Bambleby and i agree with Emily that he is arrogant and uses his students to do all the work for him。 So, I'm not interested in any potential love relationship they might get into。 I'm really sad about DNFing this book。 。。。more
